Communication

I love the quote from George Bernard Shaw “The single biggest problem in communication is the illusion that it has taken place”

Working with nursing students is a wonderful opportunity to highlight and emphasize the importance of therapeutic and effective communication in nursing practice. Unfortunately ‘tasks’ seem to get in the way and communication classes or courses are considered soft skills…or more sadly as ‘fluff courses’ compared to the real nursing skills!!

I aim to find ways to get students to think about building rapport, being genuine, showing heart….sure you can learn to take a BP or do a history but you really find out what is going on if the person trusts you and feels you are genuinely interested.

I find healthy debate, discussion and shared experiences fascinating. I try to create scenarios, find videos, pose controversial questions, bring in diversity ….to get students to challenge their values and beliefs systems and think about what it means to be nurse and how we communicate with others

How do you engage students??

Is Blogging only for PC users??

Is there a blogging bias? I am using a Mac….do the templates look different for Mac and PC users. I am trying to link my blog to the Facebook account of the School for Instructor Design. Hmm….unless I create another page…I am unsure how to create a lovely icon that is a shortcut for a link. Wouldn’t it be great if the My site page gave that as an option

 

Look in the pages

I am trying to move information into the various tabs in this blog. It may be a Virgo thing but I like lists and organizing information. I am hoping  this will make things easier to find. As I get more familiar with pages, I hope it will visually improve too!

Writing a blog is incredibly frustrating

I would like to create a sidebar list of categories  to enter ideas and suggestions to share communications tools and skills. What I can’t figure out is how to create working categories so readers can choose from a selection. I see nice sounding words like categories but blog-speak is a foreign language that is a huge struggle, Lots of ‘help’ resources that continue to blog-speak.
